Tips to maximize laser hair removal results

Laser hair removal is a rather simple and quick treatment, but following a few tips can help you prepare for your appointment, maximize your results and avoid any rare complications.

At our med spa in San Marcos, laser hair removal is performed by our highly-trained Aesthetic RNs who can help guide you through your treatment and ensure you're getting the most from your laser hair removal package.

Laser Hair Removal Preparation Tips:

  • Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks prior to your treatment and during your entire course of treatment. Sun exposure can irritate your skin and increase your likelihood of burning.
  • Do not use any product that can increase photosensitivity in the treatment area. These include, but are not limited to: hydroxy acids, retinols, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, etc.
  • Use a gentle cleanser to remove all products, fragrances and oils from the treatment area prior to your appointment
  • Inform your provider of any existing or new medications that you may be taking. Some medications are contraindicated for laser hair removal.
  • Closely shave the treatment area 24 hours prior to your appointment. For the bikini area, shave the area in the shape that you ultimately wish to achieve.
  • Do not wax or tweeze the treatment area during your entire course of treatment. And do not wax or tweeze for 4 - 6 weeks leading up to your first treatment. Our lasers target the pigment in your hair and the hair root must be present in order to be effective.
  • Do not have Botox / Xeomin injections, laser skin resurfacing, dermal fillers, chemical peels or microneedling performed in the treatment area for at least 14 days before laser hair removal
  • Avoid applying sunscreen or lotions to the treatment area for 2-3 days after treatment as they may cause irritation.
  • Schedule your appointments 4-6 weeks apart depending on the area of treatment - no more and no less. Scheduling treatments outside of this interval can impact your results as hair needs time to move through growth cycles. Remember, laser hair removal takes time and usually 6 - 12 sessions may be needed depending on the treatment area.
